Lab.dev
Lab.dev is a virtual device laboratory that incorporates the remote phone management service. You can test your developed application in the same environment of real device through Lab.dev.

  • Symbian   Windows Mobile

Lab.dev is a virtual device laboratory that allows the installation and testing, over the Web, of applications on Samsung Mobile phones.
Lab.dev is available to all members of Samsung Mobile Innovator free of charge (regardless of Membership Status,), and you can reserve phones for your own unique use during specified time slots.
You can start the system after signing into the Forum, and you automatically receive a number of credits per day. Each block of 15 minutes’ usage takes one credit, and the minimum time slot is 30 minutes (2 credits). Currently, the limit has been set at 40 credits, which equals 10 hours of daily usage time.
If you are already familiar with the service and have signed into the Forum, Windows - Lab.dev and Symbian - Lab.dev are just a click away.

System Requirements

The following is required in order to use Lab.dev:
  • A Samsung Mobile Innovator user account (Core or Hub).
  • A standard Web browser supporting JavaScript (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera or Mozilla Firefox,Safari).
  • Java Web Start, which is included in the JRE (Java Runtime Environment). The JRE can be installed from http://www.java. com/en/download/manual.jsp. - JRE version 5.0 or later is required.

Models Currently Available for Testing

Lab.dev enables access to most of the Windows Mobile handsets along with almost all Symbian handsets.

Phone Availability

There are a number of duplicate phones available in Lab.dev for each of the models listed above. The actual number of duplicates available for use depends on whether you are a Core or Hub Member.

All the phones are attached via a Web Server. However, not all phones available to you for application testing may be active at the same time, and Lab.dev therefore differentiates between those phones that are active and those that are currently disconnected. To reserve a specific future time slot, refer to the attached User Guide.

Main Features

  • Reservation of phones for your sole use during specified, extendable time slots.
  • Installation and running of applications on the phones (JAD and JAR).
  • File transfer client to move files between a phone and your PC.
  • Ability to change screen orientation where this is supported.
  • Ability to change color depth and resolution in order to improve the response time.

What can be tested:

  • Java Applications (MIDlets)
  • Symbian C++, and Flash Lite applications.
  • Python, Open C (provided that the required plug-in is installed first.) Different types of content, for example themes.
  • Web technologies, for example widgets and other types of Web applications/pages.
As a courtesy to fellow developers, please remove the application from the phone after testing.

Acknowledged Limitations

  • There is no audio support.
  • No additional peripherals are available by default.
  • Lab.dev is a remote solution – therefore, user experience may be affected by variables such as distance to server, connection speed, network traffic, and local network policies (firewalls, etc.).
  • There is no guarantee that phones will always be accessible (there may be service breaks).
  • For those phones with GPS, it is not yet possible to verify fully global positioning systems because the phones are located permanently in the Laboratory and there is, as yet, no positioning simulation tool available.
  • Samsung Mobile Innovator does not offer technical support for the service, unless you are a Core Member, in which case you can lodge a query with our Technical Team. In the event of general service queries, please e-mail developer@samsung.com
